Scarlett Johansson and Tom Hardy are amongst those up for awards at the 16th annual British Independent Film Awards.
The nominations were announced earlier today (November 11) in London by Ewan McGregor, with prison movie Starred Up scoring the highest number of nominations at eight, including nods for Best British Independent Film, Best Director for David Mackenzie and Best Screenplay. Meanwhile, Pussy Riot – A Punk Prayer, The Great Hip Hop Hoax, and The Stone Roses: Made of Stone are all up for Best Documentary.
Scarlett Johansson has been nominated for Best Actress for her role in Under the Skin whilst Tom Hardy has been tipped for Best Actor for his role in Locke. The winners will be announced in a ceremony held on December 8, hosted by James Nesbitt, writes the Hollywood Reporter.
Up against Starred Up in the Best Film category are Metro Manila, Philomena, The Selfish Giant and Le Week-end. Judi Dench has been nominated for Best Actress for her role in Philomena, whilst Steve Coogan has been nominated for Best Actor in the same movie. Jeff Goldblum is up for Best Supporting Actor for Le Week-end. Read the list of further nominations below.
Speaking about the awards, BIFA joint directors Johanna von Fischer and Tessa Collinson said: “The variety of films submitted reached a new level this year with films covering a range of subject matters and genres that perfectly showcase the diversity and creativity at work in British independent filmmaking today.”
Tom Hardy starrer marks the first 3D installment for the iconic action series
Blazing into theaters nearly three years after shooting began, Warner Bros. has dated its fourth “Mad Max” movie, “Fury Road,” for release on May 15, 2015.
The film, which began filming in summer 2012, stars Tom Hardy, Nicholas Hoult and Charlize Theron. George Miller, who directed the previous three installments, returns to helm “Fury Road.”
Warners and Village Roadshow will release the film in 3D.
“Fury Road” marks the second May release for the franchise: the series’ second installment, “The Road Warrior,” bowed May 21, 1982, and grossed $23.7 million. The third film, “Mad Max Thunderdome,” stands as the franchise’s biggest grosser, with $36.2 million domestically in 1985.
Actor Tom Hardy of Bane from The Dark Knight Rises fame is rumoured to be in the running for a lead role in Terminator 5.
The 36-year old would be starring alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger in the franchise reboot, with Game of Thrones’ Emilia Clarke and 21 Jump Street’s Brie Larson also expected to audition for key parts.Hardy is tipped as the favourite to play John Connor, the hero who grows up to lead the human resistance in the war against cyborgs. Possible rivals for the role include Garrett Hedlund and Boyd Holbrook, but nothing has been confirmed.
Schwarzenegger will return as a robot in the sci-fi story, charged with protecting the young Sarah Connor (John’s future mother) as she grows up.
The new fifth installment will continue a film series started in 1984, withThor: The Dark World director Alan Taylor expected in the driving seat.
Hardy has been notching up the top castings recently, having recently been signed to appear as flamboyant musical legend Sir Elton John in a film about his life.
Terminator 5, which is likely to be renamed, follows 2009’s Terminator Salvation and is due for release in the summer of 2015.
In preparation for playing the ’70s rock icon in the biopic “Rocketman,” the actor tells THR he’s been trying on Elton’s old clothing — he’s especially a fan of track suits.

Tom Hardy isn’t just playing Elton John in the biopic Rocketman — he’s channeling him.
Turning up in early November at the American Film Market to tout the project, Hardy — accompanied by John — revealed he’s been wearing the pop icon’s actual clothes to get into the mood (he especially likes John’s iconic tracksuits). Hardy even asked to borrow John’s watch.
“The two met up after Cannes in May and really hit it off,” says Joe Drake, whose company Good Universe is selling Rocketman (due to shoot in fall 2014) internationally.

Tom Hardy has signed on to play Elton John in Rocket Pictures’ biopic Rocketman, which will be released in the U.S. by Focus Features.
Rocketman will tell John’s legendary story, from his childhood to his unbelievable rise to fame. John is set to re-record a number of his biggest hits to match the emotional moments in the film, which will be directed by Michael Gracey, the man behind the upcoming film The Greatest Showman on Earth starring Hugh Jackman.
With an original screenplay written by Academy Award nominee Lee Hall (War Horse), Rocketman is scheduled to start shooting in fall 2014.
Director Doug Liman’s Everest, a period picture that centers on British mountaineer George Mallory and his ill-fated third attempt to conquer the mountain in 1924 at the age of 37. Tom Hardy was previously attached to play Mallory, but plans to start production in March didn’t mesh with Hardy’s schedule. Sony is eyeing Benedict Cumberbatch (Star Trek Into Darkness) and a number of other actors.
