Tom Hardy is reading Britain a bedtime story on New Year’s Eve

Tom Hardy, the actor famous for playing Bane, Charles Bronson, the Krays and a whole host of other downright terrifying roles, is going to be reading the children of the UK a bedtime story on New Year’s Eve.

The 39-year-old Londoner might not seem like an obvious choice, but Hardy does have some experience of reading bedtime stories and not scaring the bejesus out of his audience: he’s got two kids.

Hardy, who was joined by his dog Woodstock for filming, is going to read ‘You Must Bring a Hat’ by Simon Philip and Kate Hindley. It’s a story about a boy who is invited to a party where, you guessed it, he must bring a hat.

If you and/or your little ones like what they see, there’s good news. Hardy will be back on the show in the new year reading more bedtime stories.

Hardy will be on CBeebies Bedtime Stories on New Year’s Eve at 6.50pm.

Tom Hardy to play Antarctic explorer Ernest Shackleton

British actor cast in tale of polar expedition leader who led his crew to safety when their ship was destroyed by ice.

Tom Hardy is set to star in a new film about Ernest Shackleton, the polar explorer famous for his remarkable escape from the Antarctic continent with all his crew despite losing his ship when it was crushed by ice.

Deadline reports that the movie, the filming of which presents many logistical problems, has received financing and appointed a scriptwriter.

The story of the ill-fated journey of the Endurance has been told on screen before, most famously by Kenneth Branagh in a TV film for Channel 4 in a production the Guardian described as “inadvertently hilarious”.

In 1914, two years after Roald Amundsen had become the first person to reach the south pole, Shackleton led an expedition attempting to cross the continent. However, early on in the voyage the party’s ship, the Endurance, became trapped in an ice floe.

The crew waited for nine months, hoping that when spring came the boat would be freed, but it became clear that it had suffered too much damage and they were forced to abandon it.

Then followed two dangerous sea journeys in the lifeboats rescued from the Endurance, first to the barren Elephant Island and then, leaving most of his men behind, the journey of 720 nautical miles to South Georgia.

Against the odds, Shackleton and his team made the journey successfully and were able to send help to rescue the rest of the men still trapped in Antarctica. Astonishingly, the entire crew of the Endurance survived and were welcomed back as heroes.

No release date has yet been set for the film, which will be produced by StudioCanal.

Tom Hardy looks like a total bad-ass in a moody trailer for his new TV series Taboo

A new teaser for FX and BBC’s gritty new period drama Taboo has given us Tom Hardy at his bad-ass best.

Sporting some rather fetching tribal tattoos and swearing to do “very foolish things”, Hardy’s role as vengeful James Delaney looks just as dark as we promised it’d be.

Taboo follows Delaney, a traveller long thought dead who returns to 1814 London after ten years in Africa, burdened with his father’s mysterious legacy.

His obscure family history comes to the fore when he clashes with the all-powerful East India Company over control of his family’s shipping business.

Hardy, along with his father Chips, came up with the screenplay and original idea behind Taboo, which is to be produced by Ridley Scott and Peaky Blinders and Locke’s Steven Knight.

This Is England’s Stephen Graham recently jumped on board the new series, calling it the “antidote” to Downton Abbey.

“There’s no lords or people making tea, it’s gritty and heavy. It’s a fantastic piece and a pleasure to be a part of it,” he told Digital Spy. “It was really good and I’m really pleased with what I’ve seen.”

Graham is playing the role of an Artful Dodger type, who “can kill a man… if the money’s right”. Sounds ominous.

The eight-episode Taboo boasts an all-star cast, also including Jonathan Pryce, Oona Chaplin, David Hayman, Jessie Buckley, Ashley Walters and Jefferson Hall.

Although no official release date has been confirmed, Taboo is expected to premiere on both sides of the Atlantic some time soon.
